What is a React design system, and how do you choose one?

A React design system is a set of reusable React components, design tokens and usage rules that keep a product's interface consistent. Orvain UI is one: 46 free components and 212 blocks, tree-shakeable and safe to use in React Server Components, with a matching Figma library.

By the Orvain team. Orvain UI is made by Oussema Ajmi, founder. Published October 4, 2026, updated October 4, 2026.

Orvain's Figma library is finished and available. The React and Vue code library and the MCP server are still being built, so anything below about generated code or the MCP server describes what is being shipped, not something you can install today.

What does a React design system contain?#

  • Components: buttons, inputs, menus, dialogs and the other primitives.
  • Design tokens: named values for colour, type, spacing and radius.
  • Patterns or blocks: finished screens assembled from the components.
  • Documentation: props, usage and accessibility rules.
  • A design file that matches the code.

How do you choose a React design system?#

Six questions settle most decisions.

  • Ownership: do you want the source in your repository, or a versioned package you upgrade?
  • Theming: are brand values tokens you change in one place, or styles you override?
  • Server components: can you import one component without pulling the library into the client bundle?
  • Accessibility: is keyboard and screen-reader behaviour part of every component, and documented?
  • Design parity: does the Figma file match the code, and how is that kept true?
  • AI tooling: can an assistant read the real API, or does it guess?

How does Orvain UI work with React?#

The React package is tree-shakeable and safe in React Server Components, so importing one component does not pull the library into your client bundle. Colour, type, spacing and radius are tokens, so one change re-themes every component and block. Each block page shows the React code beside the Vue code, and each component page has a live playground and an accessibility tab.

Does a small product need a design system?#

Not at first. A single developer on a single screen is usually faster without one. The case builds when a second person, a second surface or a second brand arrives, because that is when inconsistency starts to cost more than the system does.

Questions#

Is there a React design system that also supports Vue?

Orvain UI supports both from the same tokens and the same Figma source. Where the frameworks differ, each block page shows the React and Vue code side by side.

How does Orvain UI compare with shadcn/ui?

shadcn/ui is a free, widely used collection of copy-paste components. Orvain adds a Figma library and an MCP server around one component contract and supports Vue. See the comparison page for where each wins.
